In motion control systems, motor controllers are crucial for managing a motor’s performance, providing precise control over speed, torque, and positioning. The operation of the controller varies based on the type of motor—whether it’s brushless or brushed—since each motor technology requires a unique control approach.
For instance, BLDC motor controllers rely on sensors to monitor the rotor’s position and adjust the current flowing through the windings using transistors. Alternatively, sensorless BLDC controllers determine rotor position by measuring the back EMF generated by the motor, eliminating the need for physical sensors while still accurately controlling the motor’s operation.
The choice of controller depends on the specific needs of the application, including the required speed range, torque control, and positional accuracy. In certain cases, controllers must also withstand harsh environments, such as repeated sterilization processes and high shock and vibration in aerospace and defense applications.
